Have you ever experienced the buzzing sound of mosquitoes in your ears during night or daytime? Or ever felt that stingy bite and pain while you are playing your outdoor games? We all experience that mild sensation in our body. And, next, you will get a bump, reddish, swelling in your skin. While we all identify them as mosquitoes, they too have different species and manifest distinctive features.
Knowing different kinds of mosquitoes can help you in finding the right cure and warn you to maintain distance from such deadly insects.
Though there are thousands of different species of mosquitoes, different types of mosquitoes have different types of breeding and feeding habits. The four most common types of mosquitoes found in India are house mosquito, Asian tiger mosquito, the southern house mosquito, and yellow fever mosquito.
Let’s know some more about them.
House Mosquito (Culex)
The most common type of mosquitoes you find in India, especially in Bangalore are house mosquitoes. Species of these blood-sucking insects belong to this group are Culex Pipiens and Culex returns Theobald.
Don’t get scared by their names only. Cx. Pipiens are pale brown with white stripes. They are often found in contaminated water that is left standing. Storm drains, pet dishes, birdbaths, and old tires store standing water, So they are considered as the most famous breeding sited for these types of mosquitoes. The female mosquito can lay about 50 to 400 eggs at one time. And, it takes around 10 to 14 days to hatch, and sometimes it takes a long time depending on the weather. Both of these mosquito types can transmit a variety of virus and parasites to humans and pets.
Southern Mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus)
This type of mosquitoes are referred to as Culex fatigans, are mostly found in tropic and subtropic regions. It’s physical and behavioural aspects are almost similar to house mosquitoes. As they are night-time feeder, this pest is the primary vector of the St. Louis encephalitis virus and also transmit West Nile virus.
Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes Albopictus)
This species of mosquitoes has silver or bright white stripes on their abdomen, thorax, and legs. The female Asian tiger mosquitoes are a daytime feeder and are an aggressive biter.
Mosquitoes those belong to Aedes group have similar breeding habits. Females often lay eggs in contaminated, standing water. They get attracted to birdbath and flower pots. Eggs that have been flooded with rainwater hatch in a short interval of time, making it easier to spread. But, fortunately, they are weak flyers and often can’t travel more than one-half of a mile from their original sites.
Yellow Mosquitoes (Aedes Aegypti)
As we have already discussed those mosquitoes which belong to the Aedes genus have similarity with each other. Likewise, yellow fever mosquitoes also have similarity with Asian tiger mosquitoes in breeding and feeding. However, the population of these yellow fever mosquitoes has declined in many areas in Bangalore.
The annoyance of mosquitoes may cause serious health illnesses and transmit deadly diseases. These blood-sucking insects will never let you enjoy playing outdoor games with your family or friends.
